I’ve been writing for over 20 years.
Now this street kid from Brooklyn, New York didn’t always have the easiest upbringing or the greatest command of the English language. But like most American innovators, I had these creative ideas and took my imagination out for a spin. Placing these ideas to action, I began to write to hone my skills.
Writing for me was like an exorcism, a great therapy.
And to be honest, I didn’t start seeing any success in my writing till 2003. Time in which, I began to see my articles published in the local newspapers.
Learning to place all my arrogance aside, I needed to learn how to mould myself and flow like water. Accept positive criticism and be ready for the sometimes unkind and negative vibe people try to give others.
I started to see my stuff published in the newspapers, whether it was in English or Spanish. I knew I had something, and there were times I wanted to give up. After all, it had been years of rejection, frustration and ideas taken from under my nose.
Often than not, writing is a very frustrating and lonely profession.
But I got the greatest compliments from one of my professors in University.
Good old Professor Paiezy stated one day in class, “Daniel, you’re a writer!”
From that point I decided, it didn’t matter what others told me, I would follow my own path and be my own man.
In 2006 I wrote a 141 page novella called, “GALICIAN MEMORIES”. Thinking the damn thing wouldn’t go anywhere. I buried it like I had done with so many other inspirations and didn’t deal with the manuscript again till 2015.
Then, I moved on.
It wasn’t till 2007 when I actually started seeing money in writing. Wow, almost 12 years, when I began getting paid for my articles! No, it didn’t happen in America, I actually had my first paid gig in Canada. Now, it wasn’t much money; however, it gave me the inspiration to continue.
By the time I came to China in 2009, I had already published articles in the U.S., Canada, Spain and Puerto Rico. Not bad for a street kid from Brooklyn who many had stated couldn’t write. Hell, they still say it, let the haters and idiots say what they will.
Since I have been in China, I’ve written for That’s China, Nanjinger and Bogota Free Planet.
Never letting go of my integrity, because what I do takes plenty of balls and sometimes you’re not the most popular guy on the block.
Presently, I’m still writing for the Hangzhou Weekly and Beijing Global Times. I’m proud of these facts and accomplishments.
Then last year I decided to ‘unbury’ “GALICIAN MEMORIES”, give it another look, correct it and send it to a couple of publishers. It wasn’t till I was picked up by Floricanto Press that I finally started seeing my dream come true. This year I’ll become a published writer of my first book, thanks to my editors.
Case in point, don’t let people tell you what you can or cannot do. There’re plenty of haters out there who want to take away your dreams. Please, don’t let these knuckleheads take away your goals and desires to prosper.
State your goals clearly and realistically, write them down and get to action. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. You all can do it!
With this in mind, “Get to work and write!” this was what Professor Paiezy once told me, “Great things are waiting for you!”
