Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world. And what makes a woman enter such a low but lucrative profession for the pimp whom controls her?
In most cases, as with modern-day slavery, the prostitute is forced into this lifestyle because of abuse, drug addiction or to pay-off a family debt, as in the majority of cases.
For the 2.9 million women in China (figures vary) whom are into prostitution, the one truly making the profits and getting the benefits is the pimp and of course the ‘john’ (customer) who has sex with her.
Many of those who think the prostitute is doing it for pleasure or love of sex, wrong! Think again, these acts are forced onto them. They are enslaved to a violent-underworld system that most often has a tragic end. In risk of catching AIDS or STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are very high if they don’t use condoms. On most days [the majority], there’s the danger of being abused at the hands of the ‘john’ or pimp and even murdered. Some of these women are ‘secretly’ disposed off, like getting rid of the rubbish and dumped in public land fills, shallow graves or out to sea.
On others, they may be rapped daily in repeated ways.
Contemporarily and more than ever, there are 30 million slaves across the world. Two-thirds of them are women or underage girls forced into the street. The lifespan of a prostitute on the streets is three to four years. It’s not Sheila E’s, The Glamorous Life.
Can prostitution ever be stopped in such a conservative society? It can never be stopped; however, it can be curved from women getting abused or later getting killed…
How to stop part of the human trafficking?
Some critics suggest doing what some European and Western countries have done. Legalize prostitution, giving the sex workers tools for their trade: like condoms and medical treatment to protect them against the streets and its diseases. Protect the rights of these women by giving them alternatives and helping them out of this lifestyle. Another way is not prosecuting them and a chance for work outside of their profession. This is a chance for an escape.
Arresting people doesn’t cure a problem, it creates more curiosity. After all, human beings love to taste the forbidden fruit.
There’s an allure, when men come to town and see those pink lights and women are showing their ‘treasures’ to get these gentlemen into the brothel. Fronting as massage parlors, this is a way to attract the males into the buildings. This is an exciting underworld, but also it’s full of dangers and deadly.
Ninety-percent of prostitutes hate the lifestyle and are living in a hell which you and I could never absolutely comprehend.
Gathering information for this writing, I once saw a deep gash on one of the prostitute’s face. It went from her lips, all the way up her left cheek! Most of these ladies do get pushed and slapped around in the cycle of abuse and violence.
Prostitution destroys the fabric of our society and it hurts women forever physically and emotionally.
Like on the T.V. show, “Public Morals”, when a police captain is talking to one of his subordinates and saying nonchalantly, “She’s a hooker… Fair exited her life a longtime ago.”
My views are to legalize the problem, to not judge the skin trade worker and for a society with so many people, educate citizens on how it affects the prostitute. Yes, the ‘hooker or whore’ (horrible, disrespectful word by the way) is the victim here.
