Photos of a decommissioned airplane placed in front of a government building in Xiaoshan District sparked strong criticism on the Internet and officials involved felt they were wronged, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.
“These photos appeared on Sina.com and other news websites all of a sudden as if it was news. Actually the plane has been there for many years,” an official with the Jinjiang Sub-district Government said in an interview.
Because Xiaoshan International Airport is located in Jinjiang Sub-district and many local people work at the airport, Jinjiang authorities decided in 2006 to put a disused aircraft in a square as a public sculpture.
Many online posts questioned the cost of creating such a landmark and accused the local government of wasting taxpayers’ money.
The retired plane was donated by an airline company in Zhejiang Province because it has cooperation with the sub-district. The plane could fetch only 30,000 yuan (US$4,637) if sold as scrap metal.
“The installation is intended to show the development and future of Jinjiang Sub-district,” the official said.
