Chinese-American scientist Shu Chien (front left) pays homage to ancestors at the Qianwang Temple in Hangzhou yesterday. The 85-year-old is the 36th generation of Qian Liu whose name was enshrined in the temple. Qian ruled the region in the late Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Chien and Qian are the same family name in Chinese but spell differently in Taiwan and the mainland. Shu Chien is currently the president of the US Biomedical Engineering Society and received the National Medal of Science from US President Barrack Obama in 2011. He moved to Taiwan in 1949 and emigrated to the US in 1954 to study physiology.
