Hangzhou Price Bureau will hold a hearing on household water price on October 11, and a forward tiered pricing system is expected with a starting price of 2.85 yuan (US$0.47) per cubic meter, 1 yuan higher than the current price.
According to the authorities, the hearing will help decide to select out the final scheme from two plans. In both plans the pricing system will include three tiers, and statistics of last year showed the water consumption of about 90 percent of local families will be included in the first tier and be charged the lowest price.
The current water price of Hangzhou is 1.85 yuan per cubic meter, which is the second lowest among 36 big and middle domestic cities, only higher than Lhasa.
Since the water price is expected to go up, the government will provide extra subsidies to local poor families.
