Maternity maids, who are called yuesao in Chinese, are in big demand in Hangzhou and their salaries are soaring.
According to an industry insider, the average monthly salary for a maternity maid was about 3,000 yuan (US$484.5) about five years ago, but is now about 9,000 yuan.
Demand for yuesao has risen because the one-child policy was loosened, allowing more couples to have a second child.
However, some families are balking at paying a yuesao such a high salary. They also don’t like the idea of a stranger caring for the newborn and postpartum mother.
