A drug addict kidnapped a girl in a downtown fruit shop opposite the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau and was apprehended by police in less than 10 minutes yesterday morning.
The man entered the shop at the corner of Anding Road and Huimin Road around 7am and went straight to the cashier. He pointed a knife at the girl and dragged her into a back room in the shop.
Some customers in the shop realized it was a robbery and called the police immediately. Within two minutes a police car arrived and officers heard the man shouting: “I want 100,000 yuan (US$16,400) now!”
“The bank is not open yet. How about you have breakfast first and we will bring you the money soon,” one policeman said.
As they kept talking to distract the man, two officers rushed into the room, kicked off his knife and threw him to the ground. The girl was freed unhurt.
The man surnamed Ma is a native of Sichuan Province and was just released from a detox center. Police are still investigating the case.
