There are 607 centenarians living in Hangzhou, 32 more than last year, the local civil affairs bureau said yesterday, which was the Double Ninth Festival, a time to pay respect to seniors.
Cai Zangyuan, 107, is the oldest resident. She was born in April 1908, the year Empire Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi died. Cai now lives in Xiaoshan District.
Among the 10 eldest, five are 106 years old and two are 105 years old. Eight of them are women. Xiaoshan has more centenarians than other districts with a total of 103.
The number of centenarians in Hangzhou has climbed from 489 in 2013 to 575 in 2014 and to 607 this year. The oldest person in the city’s history, Liu A’er, died early this year at the age of 113.
Born in 1902 in Shaoxing, Liu gave birth to three sons and two daughters. She was 36 when her husband died.
