A Hangzhou professor held up his end of a promise — dragging himself across the earth for a full kilometer — after some of China’s county-level officials made their assets public in 2013, reports the state-run Beijing Youth Daily.
Fan Zhongxin, a professor at the law school of Hangzhou Normal University, had broadcast the promise on his microblog a year ago. The post has been wildly shared on the internet. When some officials made the move, he had a horde of watchers seeing if he would live up to his claim. Many reminded him of his duty as the new year approached.
On New Year’s Day, a video of the 54-year-old professor crawling across the ground in sportswear and mittens was uploaded from Nanhu Lake, a less populated area of the city. His hands and knees were scraped and bleeding by the end of the belly trek.
The professor was pleased to have fulfilled his promise, having remarked that there was a “new atmosphere” in China after the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party convened last November. He added that the policy should be enforced from entry-level officials upwards.
