Hangzhou was named the most popular travel destination in the Yangtze River Delta last night at the first Shanghai Daily iDEALShanghai Awards ceremony held in the Peninsula Shanghai.
It shared the distinction with Suzhou. They were selected from eight candidates. Shanghai Daily also presented iDEALShanghai Awards to 49 venues in 10 categories.
Wang Xinzhang, deputy director of Hangzhou Municipal Tourism Committee, accepted the award on behalf of the city. He said: “It’s a great pleasure for Hangzhou to receive this recognition from the readers of Shanghai Daily. The award is an encouragement for Hangzhou and motivates us to do better and make Hangzhou not only the best tourist destination in the Yangtze River Delta, but also in the whole country and the world.”
Wang Jian’er, deputy director of publicity department of the Communist Party of China’s Hangzhou Committee, said the award was a good start. They are not only making Hangzhou a famous tourist city, but also an ideal place for business and living.
Also at the ceremony, iDEALShanghai adopted its Chinese name “爱de上海” which has almost the same pronunciation as the English name. The lifestyle awards, given by Shanghai Daily, an English-language newspaper founded in 1999, go to the most popular restaurants, bars, travel destinations, hotels and airlines of the year. The winners are selected by votes from the public and a professional jury panel.
Shanghai Daily introduced the iDEALShanghai sub-brand in August to provide accurate, timely and useful city guide information for local expats and foreign visitors. The sub-brand now has a weekly newspaper, a monthly supplement, a website (iDEALShanghai.com) and an iPhone app.
