“Here kitty, kitty…” I’m after mammals with those behaviours of prima Madonna that impersonate human qualities. These are cats and they behave arrogantly on the catwalk and as they go into their small hotels, hopefully not to be bothered by the curious onlookers. People that come to meet these beautiful-fat creatures that ‘slay in their sleep’ over 18-hour days and are only active for six hours! Talk about lazy, having it easy and doing nothing. What a great life! And this special place is called the “Pussycat”, a small dinner styled/restaurant dedicated to cats and their ‘royal maintenance’. The only one in Nanjing and if you’re a cat lover, this is the place for you. Now, it’s not cheap. I am talking about for a drink and sit down to admire the kitties at least 40 Yuan a piece.
Cats have plenty of human traits; for some are happy, playful, or giving you the ‘evil eye look’–telling the visitor to ‘leave me alone, I just want to sleep’. Others who are plain indifferent to the visitor… Without as much as a peep or a meow, these ‘fat little monsters’ wanted to be touched and others just left alone. The extreme attitudes of cats and no middle ground… Most of them woke up to eat and go back to sleep into their comfortable lives.
Catch mice here, not in your dreams! You are paying for the pleasure of their company. Ha, talk about pompous ways! And who has ever had cats understands this all too well. They don’t serve you, you serve them! Cats will come to you when they are good and ready and not all cats want to be pampered.
And what makes people love cats? They are after all difficult and always want to be the center of attention. So what is a person to do, but sit, enjoy a yogurt-styled drink or walk around to admire the dozen or so cats that decorate the establishment!
There is one called, “Fat White” (Da Bai), cute as can be. All bright-eyed and bushy tailed when it has awoken, gorgeous indeed. Another is just humongous–we are talking at least a big one of seven kilos or more.
Cats come with their fur in white, grey and ginger. Some are friendly and some are not. Follow the instructions of the restaurant and enjoy the moment. If you are a cat lover, what makes you love cats? Well, principally, you have to earn their respect!
Mao Mi (Pussycat) it is what it is, and again, you are paying for the pleasure to be with indifferent-lazy overly pampered cats. Therefore, only come if you like cats and want to enjoy a simple drink and dessert to relax. Upon entering this dinner, you’ll be wearing shoe-protection for the floor and for walking around to see the cats. Carefully look and you’ll be impressed by their beauty, size and weight.
If you come, reservations are done a day ahead. Weekday evenings it’s practically empty. This place is full more during the daytime and weekends.
To get here, it’s as easy as taking Metro line 1 to Zhujiang Lu and find exit 4. Taking a left, walk five minutes to the Saige Computer Mall, it’s on level 3. The restaurant runs from lunch time to 10 p.m.; however, be aware, level 3 closes after 6 p.m. So you’ll be entering through the back of the restaurant, which is pretty isolated, so ask questions or check their information out on the internet for details and critiques.
