Hi there folks, hope you are all having a good time in our city, Hangzhou. How have your meals been lately? Have you been to any fancy new restaurants? Come across a gem of a kitchen that serves the most delicious lamb roast? Well if you and your party are in the mood for some delicious, tender leg of lamb that you can pull from the bone with a pair of chopsticks, then we suggest you get on your bikes or into a taxi and head on down to one of our favourite streets in hangzhou, HuPao Road. There opposite the Hangzhou Zoo, in an alley called SiYanJing, you can find many a youth hostel and bed and breakfast. Our destination for today is Ma Deng Bu Luo Youth Hostel(马灯部落青年旅室).
Their speciality is Roast Lamb Leg. A fragrant, tender and melt-in-your-mouth chunk of juicy lamb leg spiced just right and served without a knife or fork because as mentioned the meat is so soft that a pair of chopsticks is adequate when peeling off soft chunks of lamb from the bone. They had donkey meat as well and as much as I think donkeys, horses and zebras should not be eaten, I gave this little delicacy a try and it was great. So great in fact that my companions finished the plate of meat before i could really get stuck in, but that’s ok i had the Lamb Leg to pick on. We had a great dish of brocolli and a sweet and salty tomato and vegetable soup. All in all a great meal fit for the price and the surrounding scenery, and quietness that is broken now and then by the bark of a dog or the whistle of a bird makes the whole affair that much more worth it.
Oh yeah, they have a mini pool table as well, which makes for great entertainment while waiting to be seated or while lazying around. Very quick internet connection if you want to check the score, stocks or your emails. And if you really want to know, there are some pretty awesome people hanging about MaDeng BuLuo youth hostel, foreign and chinese, waiting to chat to a friendly face and drink a beer with.
Great food and reasonable prices.
Surrounding scenery and atmosphere of the hostel.
Climbing wall (5 metres high).
Service a bit slow, but you don’t want to rush lamb.
When you go there, try to sit upstairs and not in the basement like we did.
