The Hangzhou Meteorological Bureau issued another orange cold wave alert yesterday and said the cold snap is expected to continue through today.
The mercury slipped to a low of minus 9 degrees Celsius early this morning and some roads in the city are slippery with ice and snow. The temperature will edge up tomorrow to a low of minus 3 degrees and a high of 3 degrees.
After the big snow, rain is expected from Wednesday to Saturday and the temperature will rebound to 9 degrees on Thursday and Friday, the bureau said.
The annual Spring Festival travel rush began yesterday in freezing weather. The first train marking the start of this year’s massive exodus left Shanghai for Nanchong in southwestern Sichuan Province at 2am yesterday, carrying 1,146 passengers.
About 11 million people are expected to travel by train to and from Hangzhou during the 40-day peak travel season.
