Hangzhou has been suffering persistent smog weather since early December as well as some eastern cities, which led to a surge in sales of dust masks and air cleaners.
Residents flocked to buy dust masks at local drugstores, many of which have sold out till yesterday. And air cleaners are being snapped up online.
Hangzhou ranked No.3 on online purchasing for masks and cleaners to battle the smog, following Shanghai and Beijing, according to statistics from the e-commerce platform Taobao.com.
The China Meteorological Center has upgraded the alert from a yellow alert to the more serious orange alert for worsening smog in central and eastern regions.
The good news is that a cold front with gale-force winds is expected to sweep China tomorrow and ease the smog.
